WORKING WITH AGRESSIVE CHILDREN

Managing aggressive behaviour in children and young people.

Fast becoming the flag ship course of Excel21 for social work agencies, this course is hugely sucessful in taking people working with children and giving them a real and practical understanding of aggressive behaviour.

If we acknowledge that caring for young people can evoke a number of feelings for us, we can identify our strengths and limitations.

Young people in our care can and do present as aggressive and violent, often with little or no warning. Whilst having an understanding of their background helps, knowing what trigger points children have can significantly reduce the risk of a situation escalating.

Being able to identify what causes young people to become aggressive means we can focus on avoiding some potentially very challenging situations.

Being able to acknowledge our own feelings when young people are being aggressive to us or other family members, means we can manage situations with fewer emotions attached to them.

This course is aimed at foster carers working with children and young people. However, the skills are directly transferable to every day life.

This course is not based on techniques of behaviour management, rather and understanding of the nature of aggression in children.

 What will you gain:

•  Understand the nature of anger and aggression and be aware of how people can become aggressive

• Understand the assault cycle and recognise “trigger” factors in potentially threatening situations

• Develop a range of professional skills and personal strategies to help them defuse potentially threatening situations
